Fish
Autumn McBride
A glaring fruit parfait
Some bills I haven't paid
Mosquitoes are humming
They're so hungry
And I guess I'm just so delectable
Most days I'm nothing, other days I'm worn like a mink coat
Worn like a dog blanket, worn like a diamond ring
I think it isn't fair that lace tears so easily
Lounging is just rotting in a different tax bracket
Fishnet beaten legs, women looking like tennis rackets
Have you ever filleted a fish before? You know what it feels like when you snap its neck?
Yeah.
Well, I'm not like you
I'd never do that to a chicken, or a dog, or a woman
Maybe I would if I knew what herbs and wines paired with them
Have you ever watched the sun set on someone else's life?
And meeting them is like driving by and trying to snap a shot before your phone dies?
But it’s always blurry and never gets all the colors right
And before you know it, their day has turned to night
And before they know it, they are blurry and never got all the colors right
Have you ever been to a country where you learn the name of the animal that you're about to eat for dinner?
Some just call that dating
People say mosquitoes should be extinct but for frogs and fish, they are a vital source of protein
But they don't think on the coast, and they don’t know what they don’t know
Have you ever stung a mosquito?
Or worn a mink coat?
Have you ever seen a diamond in the flesh?
Or a blanket, or a woman, or a fish?
Were you certain when you did?
