Alfalfa

Lily Rochin
If you want me to be
Your nutrients,
I will become
Green, then yellow.
A cycle of the sun,
Birthed and dried.
A thorned corpse,
Poking through the back of a crochet shirt.

I suppose my body is a blade.
I've wedged myself between the rabbit’s ribcage,
Purple and all.
My brittle bones feed
The body of cattle;
I'll call it suffering.
Your mouth, full of milk and blood.
The gnashing teeth whisper
Words of affection.

I sway to the side like the wind asks of me.
The blooms at the tips of my skeletal form can't save me.
I've been yearning
For a vase by the window.
Yet I am
Burial, flowering, and digestion.
