I am a Scared Dog

They say love finds you when you least expect it
But I am a drug dog who sniffs it out
As if it's my own personal narcotic
 
I am a starving dog
One who can’t help but to consume it
In less than three bites
To ravage in its glory like it’s the day-old kibble my neighbor set out for me
It’s the only thing I have to eat
 
I am a stray dog
One whose skeleton protrudes from my body
All twenty-six ribs anchored by an awkward spine
One that curves down into my tail
Cowardly tucked between my legs
 
I am a shelter dog
One who has been returned two times
Hoping that the third time's the charm
 
But I am a scared dog
One whose eyes scream
“Pet me”
“Love me”
One who will bite you if you get too close
